HEAR THEIR FOOTSTEPS. THE OLD EDWARDIANS AT WAR 1914-18

31/1/2015

In 1914 Europe divided and the British Empire was plunged into  war with Germany. The  summer of the previous year saw the School's  Cricket First XI pose for a photograph at Whiteley Woods. By the cessassion of hostilities in November 1918 seven of that team were dead, killed in action.
John Cornwell's 'Hear Their Footsteps' chronicles the life and times of those Old  Edwardians who went to war, some never to return and many of whom  to this day are immortalised on the honours board near to the great assembly hall.
A magnificent read and available via the Old Edwardians at £5.00 (plus postage and package). Please contact the President for further information.

An Australian Story

In November 2014 this lovely correspondence was received from Ian Brown about his grandfather Francis Ernest Brown a former master at the school. We were fortunate to meet up with Ian on 19 January 2015 when he was in Sheffield and together with John Cornwell we were delighted to undertake the 'Grand Tour' of the school with him.

John Parr (President)

Francis Ernest Brown

Good morning,

As I was admiring the beautiful presentation clock given to my grandfather, Dr Francis Ernest Brown, when he left the staff of King Edward VII in 1911, it occurred to me that the school’s archivist may appreciate receiving a few details on the later career of Dr Brown.

He was second master at KE VII from its foundation in 1905 until  1911 when he was offered the Headmastership of Preston
Grammar but withdrew his candidacy to take up the Headmastership of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia (where he served from 1912 – 1929).  Further details in the bio note following.

You may be aware that Geelong Grammar has many distinguished alumni, including the Prince of Wales, who was my contemporary at the School.    Please forward the link below as you deem fit.

My best wishes to King Edward VII….

Sincerely

Ian Brown

ERIC ALLSOP (KES 1935-40)  AWARDED LEGION D'HONNEUR

18/1/2015

Eric Allsop who was at the school from 1935-40 has recently been awarded France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honneur. He is one of a number of British ex-servicemen to be honoured in this way because they are veterans of the D-Day landings and the subsequent critical and bitterly contested campaign in Normandy leading ultimately to the liberation of Europe. The Order was established by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and British veterans have been eligible for this prestigious award since 2014
Early on the morning of 6th June 1944 Sapper E. Allsop of the Royal Engineers was one of the first men ashore on Juno Beach, as Canadian forces assaulted the Normandy coast. His task was to defuse mines attached to the tank traps and make the beach safe for the following infantry and armoured units.
Eric Allsop served throughout the 1944-45 campaign in North West Europe, came home to Sheffield, became well known in local cricket circles, captained the Old Edwardians Cricket XI  and still lives within a mile of King Edward VII School.
During the Sheffield Blitz in December1940 when Eric Allsop was still at school, he ran messages on his bicycle for the ARP and for three hours helped to put out fires and rescue people from bombed houses while the bombs were still falling. Then, when he finally got home to Nether Edge he found his own home had been seriously damaged by a German bomb. For his fortitude that night he was presented with a special commendation by King George VI himself.
